Rockin' S Grassfed Beef / Sogno ("sown-yo") Ranch began its transformation almost 20 years ago in 1999. The land had been neglected and overgrazed, but we saw the potential to restore native grasses and raise free-range grass fed and grass finished beef and Beefalo, using no growth implants, soy, corn silage, grains, or antibiotics. Even our little treats to call them in are not disruptive to their ruminant system. Because of the 10-year drought, it took close to 15 years before we could allow grazing. We are selectively clearing the land to allow for natural habitat and shade for our herd. They free-range and enjoy a low stress environment. During the drought we also built another stock tank and enlarged the existing tank. Water is a major issue in Texas. It's a rough land, west Texas prickly pear and rocks. We did leave some of the mesquite trees since they are one of the best sources of pollen for the honey bees which are in danger. We worked with the NRCS (our local Agricultural Department) to be apart of one of their Conservation Programs that protects from erosion the banks of a creek that runs through our property. The Beefalo are a registered breed. They possess the heart-healthy qualities of the American Bison. They have sweat glands and a dense hair covering like the buffalo, so they do well in Texas heat but also cold winters. The bonus is our family can go out and yell "Ho Cows" to call them in and make sure they are healthy. The meat is like bison, or buffalo as some call it, but their disposition is gentle like cattle and the meat tender. Our hope is to provide quality meat raised with care and dignity in their environment. The same meat our family enjoys; from our pasture to your plate. See our website for details.
