About this farm

Down Home Farms is a small (100 acre), veteran-owned farm on the outskirts of Mt. Gilead in Morrow County. We raise a variety of animals but our main product is grass-fed and finished beef from fabulous Belted Galloway cattle. Belties are known for their nutritious beef and do very well raised on grass. Compared to other beef, (on average) the beef of the Belted Galloway is 46% lower in calories, 72% lower in fat calories, 68% lower in total fat, 69% lower in saturated fat, 57% lower in cholesterol, 19% higher in protein, 67% higher in calcium, and 73% higher in niacin (see http://beltie.org/statistics-on-beltie-beef.php). We allow our cows to naturally wean their calves, do not use hormones and only use antibiotics if needed to save the life of the cow. We also sell registered breeding stock. Most years we raise a few feeder pigs (pork) (purchased from a friend's son who raises them to help pay for college). The pigs live outdoors with shelters in the pasture and are free to root and play at all times. They receive some kitchen scraps but are mostly fed a soy-free feed along with the grass they eat. We raise layer chickens who get to roam throughout the pastures and woods most of the day. They are locked up at night for their protection from predators. Depending on the size of the flock, we may have eggs for sale. We supplement the chickens' diet with soy-free feed. We feel privileged to be able to live in the country and to provide such wholesome, nutritious food to our family, friends and neighbors, the way it used to be—Down Home.
