What is Half Animal?
A half-animal purchase gives you approximately half the butchered yield of a whole animal. For beef, this typically means 150-250 pounds of packaged meat including a mix of steaks, roasts, ground beef, and other cuts. For pork, a half is usually 60-90 pounds. The animal is split at the processor and you receive your share.
Why Half Animal matters
Half-animal purchases offer nearly the same per-pound savings as whole-animal buys but require less freezer space and a smaller upfront investment. It is the sweet spot for many families — affordable premium meat without the commitment of a full animal.
What to look for
Ask whether you can customize your cut sheet or if the farm has a standard breakdown. Check the estimated packaged weight and price per pound. Make sure you have a chest freezer — a half beef typically needs 7-10 cubic feet of freezer space.
