What is Quarter Animal?
A quarter-animal purchase gives you roughly one-quarter of a whole animal's butchered yield. For beef, this is typically 75-125 pounds of packaged meat. You get a proportional share of all the cuts — some steaks, some roasts, ground meat, and specialty cuts. It is an excellent way to try farm-direct meat without a large freezer commitment.
Why Quarter Animal matters
Quarters make farm-direct meat accessible to smaller households, apartments with limited freezer space, or anyone trying it for the first time. The per-pound price is still significantly lower than buying individual cuts retail, and you get to experience the full range of cuts from a single well-raised animal.
What to look for
Ask about the estimated packaged weight and total cost. A quarter beef typically fits in the freezer section of a standard refrigerator or a small chest freezer. Some farms let you split a quarter with another buyer for even smaller portions. Check whether you have any say in the cut sheet.
